Manx Loaghtan Meat Isle of Man

Manx Loaghtan

The Manx Loaghtan sheep is the last native farm animal on the Isle of Man to survive.

This ancient breed has led a precarious existence for the last hundred years, almost becoming extinct in the 1950’s.

In 1973 the Loaghtan came under the umbrella of the newly formed Rare Breeds Survival Trust and many small flocks were created.

Twenty years ago, George Steriopulos realised the best way to preserve the breed was to create a market for its excellent meat.

Today, there are about 2000 breeding ewes on the Island belonging to the Manx Loaghtan Sheep Breed Society Ltd which was awarded a PDO in 2008 for the lamb.

Slow Food has included the meat in their Ark of Taste and the prestigious “Salone del Gusto” in Turin. In 2010 it appeared at Harrods Festival of British Food.

Manx Loaghtan Marketing Ltd hopes that its discerning customers will continue to enjoy the delicious flavours of the meat and find it a pleasurable eating experience.
